Baking with the kids: The ordinary moments

10/02/2014 | posted under: Linkys, Guest Posts & Sponsored

Why we're emigrating: A letter to my children
The ordinary moments: The perks of having twins

I’ve said on here lots of times, I’m not a fan of messy play and we don’t do nearly enough of it at home (that’s what preschool is made for, right?) But I adore baking with the kids, especially on rainy days. It’s challenging with two children of the same age to supervise, but it’s really lovely to be able to have fun in the kitchen with them now they’re old enough to help break eggs and mix ingredients together.

On this particular occasion, E decided to get in on the act. T1 decided to share the obligatory licking of the bowl with his baby sister who had been watching us make our chocolate cake. She was most impressed, so much so that she screamed the house down when I took the licked-clean bowl and spoon off her to wash up.

We do scones a lot. You can make the dough pretty easily. They can spend hours cutting out the circles. Although downside is, no chocolate bowl to lick clean!

My boys are a bit obsessed with the bowl licking part afterwards so even with scones I’m sure they’d give it a go! x

Thanks. I had to run them all a bath afterwards, they ended up so completely covered in it! x

I agree with you on the subject of messy play and pre-school doing a great job of addressing those needs our little ones may have. As a matter of fact, we had a week-end of mess, too, and it is sometimes so nice to let go and just have fun with them! Loving the chocolate faces – and impressed by the fact none of them actually put the bowl on their head to try and lick it (is it just my kids?). x Mel

T1 is the reason I avoid messy play as he takes things too far and the entire house ends up covered in paint or whatever we’re playing with! But somehow baking mess doesn’t feel so bad even though it takes me ages to clear up. None of them have ever put their head in the bowl when licking it but I’m sure it’s just a matter of time! x

They look like they are having fun. Now I have children I get a bit annoyed that I have to share the licking of the bowl with them. It is by far the best part. 😉 x

Every child loves baking and licking the spoon of course!

Licking the spoon is the main reason my kids love baking! x

Wow way to go T1 with the sharing of licking the bowl, i’m not sure I will be able to do that once Arthur is old enough to bake with me its the only reason I ever bake anything!!!!

I’m not too bad at sharing that – I don’t really have a sweet tooth like they do. Getting them to all share is the hard part! Now that E has joined in I’m going to need to end up with three spoons for them to lick! x

    Hi Karen,
I tagged you in my post just now. I hope you’re up for a challenge! X Mel http://lecoindemel.com/my-desert-island-discs/

Agh oh no, I’m hopeless at these! I spend weeks debating about them to get them just right and then never get around to posting my answers! I love yours – I’m not sure what my hubby would have said about me going to a gig a few days away from giving birth! Now I’m already thinking about what mine would be…Thanks for the tag. xx
